myth - trimming your nails after dark could invite evil spirits into your home.
logic - nail clippers have sharp blades , so at night you may harm yourself and thus it is advisable to not cut nails after sunset.
Never chew Tulsi leaves
myth - according to popular beliefs , Tulsi is the wife of Lord Vishnu , thus chewing it is considered as a disrespect act. Hence , they are prohibited from plucking the Tulsi leaves.
logic - to prevent degradation of enamel and yellowing of teeth after eating this.
Don't wash your hair on certain day like Tuesday and thursday
myth - washing hair is prohibited on Tuesday and Thursday. It is more applicable to those who are affected by Mars ( Mangal ).
logic - It was started to save water , nothing else.
Don't go near a Peepal tree in the night
myth - Peepal is one tree the ghosts like to hover around and if you sleep around a peepal tree at night , the ghost will kill people.
logic - In the night there is no photosynthesis due to the absence of sunlight but respiration goes on in the plant cells. Therefore , there is lot of carbon dioxide and less of oxygen around the tree in the night . Therefore , it is not advisible to sleep under the tree in the night.
Eat curd and sugar before doing good work
myth - according to our ancestors eating curd and sugar makes all things successful. And we eat it as a good luck.
logic - curd keeps our stomach cool and sugar provides glucose.
Using lemon and green chilies to avert buri nazar
myth - in order to avoid evil eyes , it is used to hang over the outside of the houses and shop . Our ancestors used this as a symbol during ceremonies which now turned into a Totka.
logic - Aroma (smell) from lemon and chillies keep insects and other pests away from the place.
A women shouldn't do certain things while she is menstruating
myth - women's menstrual blood is considered to be impure in several important Jain Texts.
logic - in old times , there was no invention of sanitary pads or medicines. So to give rest to womens they were not allowed to do certain things while she is menstruating. And there is nothing impure about periods.
Bathe after attending a funeral ceremony
myth - according to our ancestors , evil spirits will enter the home along with us if we don't take bath after attending funeral.
logic - the people who attend the funeral are exposed to the dead body and hence the bacteria that participate in the decomposition of a dead body. That is the reason why they are asked to bath immediately after the funeral , before touching anything.
